Supermarket
Campaign: Tabling and Public Education
SOS
Food is currently targeting Food Emporium supermarkets
in New York City to pressure them to remove or at least label genetically
engineered foods in their stores as their parent company
A&P has done in Europe. We organize protests and events
to alert the public to this double standard. Last June, for example,
our 3-day "Fast Against GE Foods" at the Food Emporium
by Union Square in Manhattan drew hundreds in support. We table
and hand out flyers on weekends and evenings and ask the public
to send postcards or letters to A&P President Christian
Haub (see sample postcard/letter below). We also urge the
public to call Haub at A&P headquarters in Montvale,
New Jersey, Tel: 201-573-9700, to express their opposition
directly.
Sample postcard/letter
Christian Haub
President & Chief Executive Officer
A&P
2 Paragon Drive
Montvale, NJ 07645
Dear Christian
Haub:
I have
serious concerns about genetically engineered foods and their
effect on our health, agriculture and environment. I want
to see genetically engineered foods removed from our supermarket
shelves as has been done in A&P stores in Europe. To renew
my confidence in your stores here in the U.S. you can start
by making all A&P and Food Emporium house brands free
of genetically engineered ingredients.
Sincerely,

What
to Bring to Tabling:
- SOS Food
flyers (invite interested people to come to meetings)
- Fact sheets
on dangers of GE food and crops
- GE Resource
List
- Food Emporium
postcards (Filled out on-site if possible. Count total and send)
- Food Agenda
Petition (return completed petitons to SOS Food)
- Any other
key action mail-ins
- Pens
- Paperweights
or rocks to hold down papers in the wind
- Clipboard
(for petitions)
- A jar for
donations (for copying, postage, materials)
- Light-weight
folding card table
Tips:
Try to set
up during high pedestrian traffic hours to maximize your impact. If
anyone from the supermarket, or a local police officer, asks you to
move or stop, politely tell them youre exercising your First
Amendment Rights and educating the public about an important issue.
If the police insist, you may need to move to the curb of the street.
Typically they wont bother you.
Have fun! Feel free to check in with SOS Food folks
anytime.
