Sixth Street's Emergency Food Distribution
& Community Fridge
In response to growing food insecurity in the Lower East Side due to the COVID 19 pandemic, Sixth Street Community Center (SSCC) organized and launched a weekly free food distribution program. Since April 2020, we have been serving nearly 500 families weekly.  From the onset of COVID19, we have distributed over 350,000 lbs of fresh produce, dairy, meat and grocery items. For the first year of the pandemic, the food we distributed was provided in partnership with other organizations such as City Harvest, Beam Living, EV Loves NYC and much of the fresh produce provided by our very own Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program which offers organic produce sourced from Hepworth Farms in the Hudson Valley. By the summer of 2021,  Federal support and local resources dried up but food insecurity experienced by our families was still a stark reality. Using funds donated by our Sixth Street neighbors, friends and volunteers, SSCC pivoted to buying food from wholesale produce distributors.

Since the Fall of 2021, SSCC has maintained a steady partnership with Tay Shing/Purvey'd Corporation, a wholesale produce distributor based out of Queens, NY. Tay Shing offers SSCC boxes of donated produce along with produce at a discounted price for our distribution, allowing us to stretch our tiny "out-of pocket" budget for this program.

If you would like to support our food relief work you can make a tax deductible donation or venmo @sixthstreetcc with *food distribution donation* in the memo. Thank you for your support!
