Sixth Street Food Distribution Program
Since April 2020, Sixth Street Community Center has provided free, fresh food to neighbors across the Lower East Side. What began as an emergency COVID-response has grown into a long-term commitment, and we now host monthly food distribution events serving hundreds of families.
Across weekly distributions in 2020–21 and monthly events since, we estimate that we have shared over 450,000 lbs of produce, dairy, pantry items, and groceries with our community. After early pandemic funding dried up, our neighbors, volunteers, and donors helped us continue the work. Today, we maintain a steady partnership with Tay Shing/Purvey’d Corporation, whose donated and discounted produce allows us to stretch every dollar and keep healthy food accessible. Why This Work Still Matters New York City is facing a growing food crisis driven by rising grocery costs, SNAP delays, and gaps in federal support. More than a million New Yorkers experience food insecurity, which is simply the lack of consistent access to enough food. It is a systemic issue, not an individual failure, and it can affect anyone facing unstable income or limited resources. Families who rely on public benefits or community programs are struggling to bridge the gap. Being informed and proactive helps us support ourselves, our neighbors, and our communities — and this distribution program is one way we show up together. |
